Computer and Technical Requirements
MU In The Evening offers several courses that are web-assisted (meet in the classroom as well as require online course work) and some courses are completely online. To ensure that your computer is set up and ready to begin your online course, it is recommended that you review the hardware and software requirements.

Internet service providers
If you do not have Internet access at home or work, you will need to make arrangements for an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Services vary among ISPs, so consider the cost, time you will spend online, accessibility, speed, and ease of set up and components of the provider's basic service. Also, make sure that the provider includes SLIP or PPP services as part of their Internet package; this is required for full Internet access with graphics capabilities. You also must have an active e-mail account to take Internet courses.
Browsers
Course guidelines and materials are presented over the Internet and require a frames and java capable browser such as Netscape 4.77 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. Please note that some browsers may not be fully compatible with our course software. If you experience problems with your course you may need to experiment with different browsers.
Downloadable browsers and software updates
- Adobe Acrobat Reader (for Mac or PC users)
- Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Mozilla's Firefox (for Mac or PC users)
- Netscape
- Opera (for Mac users)
- Safari (for Mac users)
Virus protection
Quality virus-protection software is recommended. This software is especially critical if you are accessing coursework from a computer on a network that is not protected by regularly updated virus-protection software.
Division of IT software distribution
MU's licensed software is available for download by students, faculty and staff. Students can download Symantec AntiVirus and get free virus updates while enrolled at MU. You will also find free and academically-discounted software available for personal purchase.
